Good news for you

Sebastian, 2004/06/30 Wed, 6:26 pm

Working with texts written for language students is the natural way to start improving your reading skills. However when you have reached a certain level in your study and are up to the task, reading the news is probably your best next step.

The advantage of reading the news is that you are already familiar with most of the subjects from the news in your country. This is very important because you can locate and guess new vocabulary much easier.

If you are lucky enough to have a foreign language newspaper or magazine published in your country it's your best bet. It's written for foreigners in your country so the topics will be probably interesting for you. Since it's published in your country, the price is very reasonable, too. Go and subscribe to it.

If you can't do that try one of the imported news media. Of course they are more expensive but not so much if you take in account that with one newspaper you can be busy for weeks. Also they give you an insightful view into the other nation's life.

Alternatively you can explore the huge world of news on the Internet. This is very cost-effective if you have an Internet connection. Most sites offer their news service for free. There are a very few news channels (like BBC) that offer extra help for foreign language students. Once you have decided which article you are interested in, print it out, read it and work on it.
